Background Information about Alice Zilberberg

Introduction

Alice Zilberberg creates visual worlds that begin in photography and unfold into painterly digital compositions—works that are as conceptually structured as they are sensually refined. At the heart of her practice lies nature: animals in states of archaic stillness, embedded in symbolically charged landscapes. Although each element is meticulously photographed by the artist herself—with precision and sensitivity—these images are far from spontaneous captures. Rather, they are complex constructions: every work is composed from individually sourced components—animals, locations, textures, atmospheres of light. Over months, these elements are researched, photographed, arranged, and seamlessly merged into a singular image. Each piece reflects not only technical mastery, but a quiet understanding of the relationship between form and significance, presence and pause.
In her recent works, Zilberberg presents animals as contemplative figures—self-contained, at rest, absorbed into collaged environments of subdued color and fluid structure. Her portraits are graceful, their stillness almost meditative. The compositions are distilled, absent of ornament, yet charged with nuance. Color is restrained, intentionally held back, opening space for emotional resonance and quiet narrative depth beneath the surface of the visible.
Her process is exacting and deeply considered: research, site selection, photography, preliminary sketches, followed by elaborate compositing and digital painting. Animals and landscapes are not encountered in the same moment—but they are brought into contact within the image, creating a dialogue across time and place. Zilberberg travels to find light, form, and texture that harmonize both visually and thematically. It is a contemplative, yet analytical approach—nourished by philosophy, psychology, and other disciplines beyond visual art. The result is not merely a picture, but a visual meditation—on perception, balance, and the fragile relationship between humans and the natural world.
Zilberberg is based in Tel Aviv. Her work has been internationally recognized, including the prestigious Hasselblad Masters Award and multiple Julia Margaret Cameron Awards. Her images have been exhibited worldwide, acquired into private and institutional collections, and featured in The Guardian, MTV, CBC, and numerous international art platforms.
