Background Information about Signe Theill

Think all sheep look the same? Think again! Signe Theill presents the individual personalities of each affectionately named sheep. We can’t help but smile! Walther von der Vogelweise looks curious, while Arthur chews a mouthful of fresh grass. These photographic cut-outs appear remarkably real, with soft blurring to suggest movement. Printed on both sides, they blend perfectly into the environment and become a living part of the space. At first glance we believe there are real sheep in the gallery or in the front garden; these works can be displayed indoors or out.

The flock was originally developed for the courtyard of the Wilmersdorf Town Hall in Berlin, part of an exhibition to illustrate the district’s historical development. Over time, the installation has developed an identity of its own. Now, exclusively for LUMAS, four new animals have been added. The sheep are cute and seem a little cheeky. Livestock rarely viewed as individuals are given their own character, confounding us with their lifelike appearance.

Signe Theill studied at the Hamburg School for Fine Arts with artists such as Franz Erhard Walther. One of her first works was shown at documenta 7 in 1982. She works with different media, combining, for example, drawing, photography, and video art in situational installations. Today, Theill lives in Berlin and also works as a curator.
