Nancy Wood’s captivating works seem like abstract oil paintings, but are actually photographs. The British artist experiments with pigments and chemical reactions – each work of art is the product of these microscopic color explosions. Under extreme magnification, their incredible beauty becomes apparent, bending and moving like surreal matter from another dimension. Her works are framed without glass, which emphasizes the color and materiality of the surface they are printed on.

“Although I cannot turn metal into gold or water into wine, this series for LUMAS, 'Fluid Alchemy', aims to illustrate that I can at least try to make chemistry into art.”

“I developed a special technique in which I paint on both sides of acrylic glass. The layer of glass between the two painted surfaces actually becomes part of the illusion of depth and strengthens the picture’s three-dimensional appearance. A body of light comes into existence, seeming to emanate from within the painting itself.

In order to create the finely lined shapes and movement, my process involves working with self-made, large-format brushes and squeegees with various properties. The composition develops in a progression to the core of the image.”

Christoph Schrein

“In my paintings, the visual space appears to be moving fluidly. By layering wave-shaped streams of color, I establish a complex illusion of spatial depth.”

French video artist Dani Olivier clothes his female muses in artistic designs of light and shadow. Working with a pitch black background, the digital light projections give the models a sculptural appearance. Olivier presses the shutter at exactly the right moment to capture unique compositions and timeless moments of absolute beauty.

“A woman’s body is timeless. For ten thousand years, it has had the same curves, the same shape, the same rhythm.”
