Introduction
As though the holder had taken the melting off the candle's hands: for the Drip Candle Holder, Pascal Smelik translates the fluid movement of molten wax into a permanent form. Organic drips meet the polished presence of metal, creating a playful contradiction that makes the functional object feel almost sculptural. Designed by Pascal Smelik and produced by POLSPOTTEN, Drip turns something fleeting into design made to last
Bio
Pascal Smelik is interested in the point at which design relinquishes a degree of control. The Dutch designer, who graduated cum laude from the School of Arts Utrecht in 2009, explores how forms emerge through material, movement, deformation and chance. His candle-wax series Kaarsrecht was nominated for both the Piet Bakker Award and the Talent 2009 Design Awards.
This investigation also shaped his collaboration with POLSPOTTEN. For the Dutch design label, Smelik translated the idea behind his Upside Down works into the Drip Candle Holder: a form that appears to have solidified while still in motion. The result is a distinctive design language created between deliberate construction and carefully embraced loss of control.
