Daniel Martinek renders the Swiss Alps in soft grays. In his breathtaking series Bernina, he focuses on the awe-inspiring Bernina Range, which reaches heights of over 13,000 feet. Martinek always gets a feel for the area in a helicopter or even on foot. The weather conditions are unpredictable at such perilous altitudes, meaning avalanches and snowstorms are a constant threat. The air becomes thinner and thinner, the nature untamable.
Martinek’s black-and-white photographs depict a mighty mountain range with ridges and crags that date back many millennia. The photographer frames his shots with unbelievable precision, presenting perfect sections of awe-inspiring natural wonder. This gives the giant mountains a timeless, almost sculptural appearance.
The LUMAS artist puts a new twist on a classic subject with an icy clarity sure to work its magic on those fortunate enough to look upon it.VITA
Daniel Martinek was born in 1968 in Lausanne, Switzerland. By the time he was a teenager, he had already discovered a passion for photography and architecture, especially in urban and industrial settings. The photographer’s client list includes Prada, Hermès, and Coca Cola.
