Erotic Photography: A short history
Erotic photography traces its origins to the mid-19th century. The first ever ‘staged’ nude photograph in circulation was a self-portrait by French photographer and photography pioneer Hippolyte Bard, called ‘The Drowning’.
In a still very conservative 19th century, most nude photographs were private or circulated in secret. The 20th century brought about more liberal views on sexuality and photographers like Man Ray and Helmut Newton combined the two worlds of eroticism and art. The sexually-liberal 1960s and 1970s brought about a more normalised view or erotic art and erotic photography. In fact, erotic photography from this era is sometimes more risque than today's erotic photography!
Fast-forward to the 21st century and erotic photography is a widely accepted genre of art. Still, erotic photographers find new ways and perspectives to keep art-lovers and voyeurs alike enrapt. This LUMAS erotic photography collection has been curated by our art experts to represent the vast range of styles used by today’s contemporary erotic photographers.
LUMAS Erotic photographers
Erotic photography is a complex art form - it takes skill to capture the naked or partially naked body in a way that is erotic but not vulgar. Further still, given the longevity of the popularity of erotic photography and art as a whole, erotic photographers must always challenge themselves to present the thing most familiar of all in an unfamiliar way. Just think of the voyeuristic, movie-still quality of Andreas Kock's erotic art, whose female nudes are photographed through a window, and compare it with the bold and very ‘external’ character of Paul Giggle's work.
