Background Information about Erwin Blumenfeld

About the Work

Very few photographers are capable of making their presence behind the camera known through a mere silhouette. Erwin Blumenfeld is one of them. His images are marked by powerful poses and feminine curves, elegance and mystery. The breadth of his CV is supported by the diversity of his work. There are influences from Dadaism and Expressionism stemming from the time he spent growing up and studying in Berlin and hanging out at the Café des Westens. There are also elements of surrealism and cubism, themes he adopted in Paris, Amsterdam, and New York after he fled from the National Socialists in Germany. From these diverse sources of inspiration, Blumenfeld produced commanding pieces of art, moving increasingly toward the avant-garde.

In the United States of the 1940s, the works of the Jewish artist appeared fresh, innovative and, above all, courageous. Images such as “Cross” became timeless icons. This piece was more than just a cover page for American Vogue in March 1945, shortly before the end of the war. It was also Blumenfeld’s tribute to the important role played by Red Cross nurses. Blumenfeld used the image to show that ethical issues could be fashionable. This sophisticated symbiosis of politics, fashion, and art remains truly unique today.

About the Artist

The publication of his photos in renowned magazines such as Vogue, Vanity Fair, and Harper’s Bazaar made Erwin Blumenfeld one of the world’s most in-demand portrait and fashion photographers of the 1940s and 1950s. Today, he has been honoured with large retrospectives in the Jeu de Paum in Paris, the Museum Folkwang in Essen, the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum for Photography, and in the Berlinische Galerie in Berlin. At the start of his career, the talented Blumenfeld made collages under the name Jan Bloomfield. They were cynical, humorous commentaries on the times. The innovative, graphic approach to his subjects was also reflected in his later photography and ultimately became one of his defining characteristics.

Blumenfeld’s “The Look” brought him widespread recognition. He made the eyes and mouth of his model the focal point of the piece. This minimalistic, expressive style led Alexander Liberman, Art Director of American Vogue at the time, to describe Blumenfeld as the photographer “most graphic and most rooted in the fine arts .”
