Background Information about Bettina Rheims

Milla Jovovich is frequently recognised one of the most beautiful women in Hollywood. Not only does this make the actress a sought-after star, but also makes her the perfect model for artist Bettina Rheims. Since the mid-80s, the French photographer has devoted herself to the ideal of female beauty. Through series such as “Chambre close”, “Pourquoi m'as-tu abandonnée?“ and “Just like a woman”, she rediscovers femininity. Whilst we expect flawless figures and idealised facial features, Rheims delivers a completely different kind of seduction.

Influenced by Lucien Freud and Egon Schiele, Rheims is drawn to the little, human flaws such as birth marks and dark bags under the eyes. Her works continually challenge our visual expectations – with such subtlety that we question our own perception. Rather than refined re-touching and carefully balanced lighting, Rheims relies on colour photography to emphasize her models’ skin. The photographer described her fascination with the surface of the skin in a recent interview: “It reveals so much, it holds everything together. I wish I could shoot through this cloak and reveal what lies beneath.”

In addition to Jovovich, Rheims has also photographed Laetitia Casta and Dita Von Teese in haute couture outfits for her “Heroines” series. She deliberately treads a fine line between provocative, erotic pictures and deeply intimate portraits. Open, vulnerable, and yet strong, Jovovich’s gaze is intensely fascinating. Rheims has once again created a masterpiece, full of passion and character.

Bettina Rheims’ work has been exhibited across the world in renowned institutions such as the Essl Museum in Austria, the Museum of Modern Art in Frankfurt, and at the National Museum of Modern Art and the Cartier Foundation for Contemporary Art in Paris.
