Tommy Clarke: The Art of Aerial Beach Photography

Tommy Clarke climbs into helicopters for his shots. He photographs his subjects directly from above. From this view he can reveal the harmony of color found at the beach: the blue of the sea, the pastel shades of the shore, the bright colors of the umbrellas, swimsuits and towels.

The work is laminated under acrylic glass, which enhances the radiance of the colors. Together with fine framing, his work is given a calm, timeless aura that perfectly matches Tommy Clarke's artistic vision.

When artists take to the skies. By Andrea Bruchwitz.

An overhead view reveals new visual dimensions in photography. Objects flatten out, appearing smaller and almost insignificant, causing our firmly established view of everyday life to dissolve. We float above the events on the earth, and a sensation of boundless freedom prevails.

French photographer Félix Nadar took the first aerial photographs in 1858 with the aid of a hot-air balloon. “The earth unrolls like a giant carpet without edges and has neither a beginning nor an end,” he wrote.

In art, a bird’s-eye view leads to a different form of perception. Cubist painters like Delaunay and Picasso were fascinated with this new way of looking at things, and broke down the existing concept of three-dimensional space – a revolution in painting.

LUMAS artists Tommy Clarke and Bernhard Lang both use an overhead vantage point to enable us to see the beaches of the world in a new light. Clarke and Lang literally lean out of helicopters to photograph coastal landscapes at a right angle. This creates works of art in which the visual structure comprises beach umbrellas and tiny inflatable floats.

Suddenly, we can see life on earth from an entirely new angle. The impressive LUMAS artworks by Kröning & Orel and by Alex MacLean dismantle clichés, showing western life from a whole new perspective. The events on the ground are rearranged.

In the able hands of Peter Yan, drone photography is raised to a fine art. Yan is one of the contemporary world's great drone photographers. In his works, he captures unlikely and surreal scenarios - a pool or a tennis court among the crags, and fascinating orange and blue contrasts of beaches.

From Félix Nadar to Bernhard Lang to Alex MacLean, the bird’s-eye view has always fascinated artists and viewers alike. A likely reason for that is that it grants one of mankind’s oldest dreams and gives us wings to fly.

Aerial Landscapes for Your Home Decor

An aerial landscape print opens the room like no other work of art. Because they have the ability to make things a bit topsy turvy for the viewer, it is important to balance out the motif and the room.

Leaned on a floor against the wall, tilted slightly up towards the viewers, the work achieves both a trap-door effect in your interior space, and neutralizes the potential for vertigo. That is primarily a concern with drone photography and aerial work shot directly above, rather than work shot from an angle. Once you have tested to make sure they don't destabilize the room, you can hang these works high and proud!
