ADRIA – OUT OF SEASON

“This group of work represents the research of a landscape that usually is linked closely to the presence of human beings. In the summer season especially, the coasts around Rimini and Jesolo become one of the prime places for tourists in Italy. Thousands and thousands of tourists occupy the beaches of these regions. Hundreds of miles of beaches are architecturally dominated by the tourist infrastructure, manifesting itself in thousands of hotel premises, bed and breakfasts, restaurants, bars, casinos, shops and fun parks. The private baths, called “bagni”, where tourists can rent a spot, an umbrella and additional gadgets to make their day agreeable, are a distinctive feature of the area. These “bagni” mark the aesthetic morphology of these long sections of beaches.
I wanted to check-out these beaches during the time of the year, when all premises and businesses are closed, during the months when the main characters that come every summer are absent. The visual presentation of empty beaches with their typical objects like folding chairs and umbrellas is intensified by consequent overexposure and the serialization of the images in the form of diptychs. The fascination for this landscape on the Italian East Coast oscillates from a slightly hysterical aesthetic perception to knowledge about the irrevocable destruction to the consequences of mass tourism.”
